Carrying the Cross

If there was anything good about seeing the movie, the Son of God , it was how it reminded us of the extreme heinousness of the cross. For two thousand years later, I believe many of us have forgotten the excruciating pain, the shame, and the horror of crucifixion on a cross. Our society has turned the cross into a hallowed symbol, a pretty piece of jewelry. We are no longer appalled at the nature of Christ’s death, and we no longer grasp the significance of what it means to share his sufferings and to imitate him in death as the Apostle Paul admonishes us to do.

So we live as what Paul calls “enemies” of this cross. We see our religion only in terms of benefit and advantage and are not prepared to share the humiliations and suffering that commitment to Christ  involves.

In thinking about the cross in relation to other world religions, the symbol for our faith is indeed a curious one. The cross is a symbol of suffering, shame and death. It is like having the electric chair as the symbol for our God. Think for a moment about other religions. Most have us have visited Chinese restaurants and have seen a statue of Buddah in the foyer. There he is, fat and happy: arms crossed; eyes closed; serene; peaceful; introspective; contemplative.  Compare that with the cross: cruel; painful; degrading, humiliating; lonely.  This is who our God is, and it is who we are called to imitate.  This is who we are called to be, and this is where we are called to go.

The good news is that you do not need to live long in this broken world to become grateful that our God is the God of the cross. For the world in which we live is not a serene, peaceful world where we have the luxury to cross our arms and close our eyes introspectively, contemplating it all. We live in a world where 15 year-olds take guns to school kill their classmates. We live in a world where the hearts of 44 year-old men stop beating as they sleep at night. We live in a world where malignant tumors grow inside of us and we are often unaware until it is too late. We live in a world where our automobiles crash crushing the life from us.  We live in a world where tornadoes and earthquakes and floods strike without warning.

Yes, thank God that our God is the God of the cross— A God who knows what it is like to suffer as we suffer;  A God who knows humiliation, who has experienced loneliness, who knows pain; A God who has entered our broken world to participate with us in our suffering.

In this season of Lent, may this be the God we imitate.

May we regard our religion as an opportunity to lose ourselves instead of an opportunity for advantage. May we through our church, with the help of our God, give of ourselves to others.  May we go to those places of suffering and shame of heartache and heartbreak and even death and participate in it. May we suffer with others, as God suffers with us.  May we imitate Christ and pick up and carry our cross.

Humane Society’s Holy Work

I wholeheartedly believe that the employees, volunteers and supporters of the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina are doing the sacred work of God in our community.

From Genesis to Revelation, the Holy Scriptures admonish us to take care of all living creatures.

In Genesis, Adam and Eve, who represent all humankind, were instructed to be stewards over “every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:26-30).

Jesus said that God is like a shepherd who would risk much to save just one sheep that is lost (Luke 15).

The Apostle Paul wrote that God was redeeming the entire creation through Christ Jesus (Romans 8:22).

And in Revelation 4 we are given a beautiful picture of a lion, representing all wild animals; an ox, representing all domesticated animals; and an eagle, representing all birds gathered around the throne of God together worshiping God with humankind in eternity.

Last year, the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina rescued and found homes for 382 animals. Still, over 2,000 animals were euthanized at the Pitt County Animal Shelter. The Humane Society, the area’s only no-kill facility, helped to increase the live outcome by 7%, as 70% of the animals that were adopted came from the county shelter.

The Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina receives no funding from local, state or federal government and receives no funding from the national office of the Humane Society. They operate solely on local donations.

Money is desperately needed to provide more resources to pull more animals from the shelter for adoption. The Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina has been operating at a 60% reduced capacity since 2012 because of limited funds.

As the Body of Christ in this world, I believe it is our responsibility to the Creator of every living creature to do all that we can, whenever we can, to be good stewards of God’s precious creatures. Supporting the Humane Society provides us with a great opportunity to fulfill our sacred obligation.

Without God, All Things Are Possible

Perhaps we have all heard the hopeful words of Jesus recorded by Matthew, “With God, all things are possible.”

However, isn’t the opposite also true? It was the great 19th century Russian philosopher Dostoevsky who penned the phrase: “Without God, all things are possible.”

Without God, things are apt to go awry.

Without God, we have the propensity to spin out of control.

As the Psalmist insists—without God all behavior that is foolish and destructive is not only possible, it has no limits (Psalm 73:7).

Without God, selfishness, greed, deceit, resentment, malice, racism, sexism, homophobia, hate and despair are not only possible, they are probable.

Walter Brueggaman has correctly observed that: “It is the knowledge of the reality of God present and at work in our world and in our lives which sets limits to destructive possibilities.”

Lent is a time to acknowledge that we need God in our lives, for without God, all sorts of sin and evil are possible. The good news of Lent is that God has come to be in our lives through Christ Jesus our Lord. And with God, there is much that is impossible.

With God, unforgiveness is impossible.

With God, loneliness is impossible.

With God, being lost is impossible.

With God, spiraling out of control is impossible.

With God, despair is impossible.

With God, death is impossible.

Changing Denominations

denominationsAs I am in the process of leaving my Baptist roots to be commissioned by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), here are my honest thoughts on denominations.

Tony Campolo tells the story of a proud Baptist preacher who was pounding away at the pulpit preaching that the only really true Christians in the world were Baptists.  In the middle of his sermon, he yelled out to the congregation: “Is everybody here a Baptist?”

A man several rows back answered, “No!   I’m a Methodist!”

“Why are you a Methodist?” asked the preacher.

“Well, my mother was a Methodist,” said the man. “And my father was a Methodist. So they raised me as a Methodist.”

“Well, that’s the dumbest thing I ever heard,” said the preacher.  “If your mother was an ignoramus and your father was an ignoramus, would you be an ignoramus?”

“No,” said the man. “If my father was an ignoramus and my mother was an ignoramus, I suppose I’d be a Baptist!”

That shut the old Baptist preacher right up!

Now, I don’t want you to misunderstand me.  I loved being a Baptist. I am glad that I was Baptist.  However, I do not believe any of us should take belonging to any denomination too seriously. I believe the great 20th century theologian Karl Barth was right when called denominationalism a great “scandal” of the church. That the Church is so divided up confuses the world and is a direct contradiction to the will of Jesus Christ who prayed that we might be one. 

Through our baptisms, we were not born into a denomination. Through our baptisms, we were born into the one and only and true Church of Jesus Christ.  Through the baptismal waters we joined not only Baptists in the faith, but also Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, Disciples of Christs, Lutherans, Catholics, Episcopalians and “whosoever believeth in Christ” and has committed to follow Christ.

 

All Means All

Someone recently asked, “When a church says that it welcomes ‘all’ people to worship and to serve, who exactly are ‘all?’”

“All.”  Perhaps the only time this simple word is ever ambiguous is when it is used in a sentence with the word “church.”  For some very bad reasons, the most inclusive and encompassing word in the dictionary becomes exclusive when religion enters the syntax.

“All.” Ever since the Apostle Paul used the word when he said “And Christ died for ‘all,’ that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again (2 Corinthians 5:15), the word has been thoroughly questioned by those who are offended by such grace.

However, when a church says that it welcomes “all,” I believe that church is saying…

If you are the wealthiest business owner in town, we welcome you. If you have sold your food stamps to purchase alcohol and pot, we welcome you. You are welcome here if you consider yourself  “a church person,” “religious” or “spiritual,” or if you are one of those who believe organized religion is a crock. The color of your skin, your gender identity and your sexual orientation does not matter as you are welcome here with open arms. If you grew up in the church, you are welcome. You are welcome if you have never attended church and have serious doubts that God even exists. If you believe in a literal Hell, and you can name people who are going there, you are welcome. If you hope to God there is no Hell, you are welcome. If you believe in God only because you want to go to heaven, you are welcome. If living forever really does not interest you, you are welcome. We especially welcome you if you are Muslim, Hindu, Taoist, Jewish, atheist or agnostic. If you are married you are welcome. If you have never been married, been married many times or don’t even believe in marriage, you are welcome. Pro-life, pro-choice, pacifist, soldier, documented, undocumented, illegal, legal, you are welcome here with us because we are “all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

When a church says that it welcomes “all” people to worship and to serve, I believe “all” means “all.”

Lenten Contradiction

“Ugh!!!  Ash Wednesday? Lent?  Really?  Do we really have to?  It all sounds too depressing and somber to me.  Acknowledgment of my mortality? Confession of my sin? Repentance, contrition, penitence?

“ I’m really not in to all that!  I really don’t like to hear about that kind of stuff. Suffering, mourning, fasting, ‘from dust you came and to dust you will return”—I can do without that in my life.  Besides it’s a contradiction of my faith! My faith is upbeat.  My faith is about life, not death.  My faith is about forgiveness, not sin.  My faith is about glory, not suffering.”

“And not only is it a contradiction of my faith, it is a contradiction of the world around me. The winter solstice is past. The days are getting longer. The sun shines a little brighter. Birds are beginning to sing again. I’m ready for some Spring! I’m ready for some new life!  I’m just not in the mood for the somber melancholy of Lent.”

“I tend to prefer some of these young preachers that  I have been watching on TV lately.  They tell me how to find power and success. They tell me how to feel good. That’s what I need. So you can have your Lenten services!”

The truth is that these forty days from Ash Wednesday to Easter are among the most counter-cultural and subversive in the church year. Confession of sin, repentance, penitence, contrition, the focus upon suffering, sacrifice and death, honesty about our own mortality—these are all matters that do not come naturally for us. We live in a success-worshiping, power seeking, feel-good culture. And Lent moves us an entirely different direction. It contradicts everything that our culture promotes.

Lent is primarily about the truth of our sin.  Sin that is so much a part of who we are that no matter how hard we try, there’s just no way to avoid it.  We can skip the Ash Wednesday service and the whole season of Lent and listen to those feel good preachers every day, but we cannot hide from the truth.

Yet, there is good news. And it is the greatest contradiction of all

As the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Rome, though our sin was serious, in Christ, “grace abounded.” Our misdeeds are abundant, and our sin is boundless.  Yet, as Paul says:  in Christ mercy is abundant, and grace is boundless!

To the unrighteous has been given righteousness. We could not get good enough for God, so God in Christ made us good through revealing his saving love for us.  We could not do right by God, so God in Christ did right by us.

Instead of distancing God’s self from us for our failure to be good, loved us into relationship with God. This is the great, wonderful contradiction of the cross, the great contradiction of Lent upon which rests our hope in life and in death.

Lent: A Time to Tell the Truth

A few years ago an Episcopal church in a coastal South Carolina town created a ruckus as when it placed three crosses on the lawn adjacent to their church. They draped them in purple for Lent. After a week or so, the church received a call from the local Chamber of Commerce.

They called complaining, “We hate to cause any trouble, but Spring Break is right the corner, and the tourist season is starting to crank up. And we think those crosses that you’ve erected are just sending the wrong message to visitors on the beach. People don’t want to come down here for a vacation and be confronted with unpleasantness.  On vacation, people want to be escape from all of the unpleasantries of life and relax, be comfortable.”

Well, after much debate, the church stood its ground, and the three crosses stayed.  “It’s Lent,” said the church. “People are supposed to be uncomfortable.”  William Willimon calls Lent “the season of unpleasant uncomfortability.”

Willimon says that one of the reasons this season we call Lent is so unpleasant is that it forces us “to confront so many of those truths about ourselves that we spend much of the rest of our lives avoiding.” Here, during this Lenten season, “we try to tell the truth about ourselves, and sometimes the truth hurts.”

Lent is a time to honestly say, “I am a rotten scoundrel. I do things that I ought not do. I know they are wrong, yet I do them anyway.  I don’t do things that I know I should do. I think way too better of myself than I ought. Even my best deeds are tainted with pride and selfishness.  Sin is so much a part of my life that I cannot escape it.”

Yes, this is the season of telling the truth, even if it pains us a bit.  But here’s the good news.  The truth will set us free! No matter how hideous, disgusting, and abominable our sins are, the God’s honest truth will always set us free, because in Jesus Christ, we have been loved, forgiven and accepted.

On Ash Wednesday, we will gather together to worship. During this special service we tell the truth, and then, we will hear the truth.  We could not do right by God, so God, in Christ, did right by us.

A Brief History of Ash Wednesday and Lent

Early Christians observed Good Friday and Easter Day—separated by a fast—as a singular observance of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.  However, this approach to the culminating events in the life of Jesus quickly changed.  By 100 A.D., Christian writings mentioned a period of fasting and praying called Lent.

 The season of Lent developed as people recognized the importance of Easter celebrations.  Christians developed a period of preparation to adequately ensure a proper observance of the resurrection event.  To truly prepare for Easter, Christians originally believed that a “tithe” or a tenth of the year should be given for such preparation. Forty days, which is roughly a tenth of the year, was chosen.  This is also the number of days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry.

In most churches today, the Lenten season is the forty-day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter, excluding Sundays. Since the resurrection of Jesus, Christians have regarded every Sunday as “a little Easter.” Services were moved from the Sabbath to Sunday to celebrate the resurrection, thus, the Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter are referred to as Sundays in Lent rather than Sundays of Lent.

One of the most important ways to prepare for Easter during Lent is to recognize one’s sinfulness and need for God’s grace that is fully revealed in the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Throughout history, both Jews and Christians have used ashes to symbolize their sinfulness.  Wearing ashes is an Old Testament symbol of grief, penitence and mourning.

This Wednesday, First Christian Church joins Christians all over the world in this simple service. We gather to express sorrow for our sin and our mortality and to acknowledge the necessity to repent and accept Christ as our Lord and Savior.  Together, we recognize our need for the salvation made possible through the death and resurrection of Christ.  The service on Ash Wednesday has been very common among Catholics, Anglicans, Episcopalians and Lutherans.  However, since the 1990’s, the service has been adopted by mainline denominations including Methodists, Presbyterians, Disciples of Christ, and moderate Baptist churches.

Mainline churches believe there is an increased relevance for this service in light of the contemporary church movement to exclude signs of the faith that people may find offensive.  In an age where many churches have removed crosses from their sanctuaries and potentially offensive language such as “repentance,” “lost,” “sin,” “blood” and “death,” First Christian Church proudly and humbly embraces these basic tenets of our faith.

Greatest Love Story Ever Told

greatest love storyJesus did his best preaching when he told a story, a parable. Jesus simply told a story, usually taken from the ordinary, everyday experience of life to reveal something extraordinary about who our God is and how much our God loves us. So, at this time, I would like to attempt to do the same.

Once upon a time, a man and a woman who loved each other very much were married (by the way, this is a true story, based on a real couple I know). They shared a wonderful life together.  They lived out their marriage covenant in a way that many couples do not duplicate.  They were completely faithful to one another in every way.  They were never abusive to one another, and neither one ever held any grudges or let selfish ambition come between them.

The couple had been married for nearly thirty-years, when the husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. After several unsuccessful brain surgeries to control the progression of his disease, he was left in a catatonic state and had to be admitted to a nursing home. Unable to lift his head, he was spoon-fed and cared for as if he were an infant.  On most days, there was no way to tell if he even knew he was in the world.

Yet, this loving, compassionate wife, who promised to be faithful in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, for better or for worse, till death shall part them, remained very faithful.  A day never went by when she did not visit the nursing home to make sure his needs were being met, letting him know in the best way she can that she will always remain by his side.  And oftentimes, she made his favorite dishes at home: strawberry shortcake, always using pound cake as he liked it, and sometimes a pecan pie.  She would then wrap the dessert up and bring it to the nursing home, where she would place one hand under his chin, lift his head and feed him the cake or pie with the other hand.

I have often thought how wonderful it would be to know that if one day my health fails me, and I wind up in a similar situation, someone will be there for me, to not only check on me daily, to make sure I am treated well, my needs are being met, to stay by my side, but also to prepare my favorite dishes, which just so happens to be strawberry shortcake and pecan pie, hold my chin, lift my head, and feed me.

This is who I believe our God is.  God is a loving spouse who is living out a covenant with us, not only promising to be faithful, to stay by our side, but there at our side, in our weakest moments, takes a hold of our chin, lifts our heads and feeds us pie, a peace beyond understanding.

But you know something. There is something amiss in this parable.  There is something wrong, something missing.  For when we really think about it, as wonderful as this parable is, we realize that it simply fails to do the greatest story ever told appropriate justice.  Especially when we consider that unlike the husband in this parable, we have not always been faithful to our God; when we consider our constant betrayals and our continuous denials. When we consider that when God offered us the very best gift God had to offer, the gift of God’s self, we reciprocated that gift with the very worst we had to offer, the cross.  But remaining faithful, empowered by pure, unconditional love, God summoned the will to resurrect this gift and give him right back to the undeserving ones who killed him, making eternal life possible for all.

Perhaps a more appropriate parable would go something like this:

Once upon a time, a man and a woman who loved each other very much were married. However, they did not share such a wonderful life together. From the very beginning, the husband had a problem with alcohol, which grew as time went on. Although the woman remained true to her marriage covenant, he did not. He had numerous affairs.  He usually blamed the alcohol, but on occasions he would tell his wife that his running around was her fault. He simply did not find her as attractive as he once did.

Family and friends, even her pastor, rightfully tried to persuade the woman to leave the loser. But they did so in vain. She said repeatedly that she promised to remain faithful in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, for better or for worse, till death shall part them, and she intended to do just that. And this husband was not always bad. She said, “At times, when he is sober, he could be a perfect gentleman, always apologizing for his actions. He can even be attentive to my needs.”

But as time went on, those good times became fewer and further apart. The abuse, which had in the past always been verbal and mental, turned into physical abuse.  It got to a point when the woman could hardly remember a day when he was sober and when he did not strike her.

One day, in a drunken rage, he was yelling and screaming for his supper. As the wife, who had been nursing a broken jaw from a previous fight, was preparing it as fast as she could, he hurled abusive insults at her and struck her again on the side of her face that was still swollen.

She said, “Stop it. Please stop it.  Look at yourself. You are not the man that I married. Look what you have let alcohol do to you. You don’t know what you are doing.  Please, please get some help.  Please. Don’t you know that I still love you?”

Interpreting her desperate pleas as being combative and disrespectful, he threatened to kill her if she did not shut up.

She continued, “Please, please, I love you, I really do love you.”

He stormed out of the kitchen, slamming the door. She went into the den, dropped face first into a pillow on the sofa and began to cry.  Weeping would be more accurate.  He came into a den with a pistol, jumped on top of her and placed it against her head. She cried:  “Please no. I love you, I love you.”

“I swear to God if you don’t shut up and fix my supper I will blow your head off.” Somehow she managed to turn around and place both of her hands on the pistol. As they struggled, the gun went off.  The husband fell to the floor, bleeding from the head.

But the sorry sod was too mean to die. However, he had to be placed in a nursing home, for he was left in a catatonic state, unable to lift even his head. He had to been spoon-fed and taken care of like an infant. On most days, there was no way to tell if he even knew he was in the world.

And yet, this wife, who promised to be faithful in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, till death should part them, remains faithful to this very day. A day does not go by when she does not visit the nursing home to make sure his needs are being met. Letting him know the best way she can that she will always remain by his side. And oftentimes she makes his favorite dishes at home: chocolate cake and coconut pie. She wraps it up and bring it to the nursing home, where she will hold his chin with one hand, lift his head and feed him with the other.

Of course, unlike the first parable this one is not based on any man or woman I know. For no one could possibly have so much compassion, be so forgiving, so loving, so patient, so merciful, yet so offensive. No one loves with such socially unacceptable grace, no one except God, as revealed to us in the greatest love story ever told.

For when God offered us God’s very best, we nailed it to a tree.  And then somehow, some miraculous way, through the power of the resurrection, born out of pure love, God fed us and continues to feed us pie.

Baptized into a Living Hope

They were yearning for the good old days—days when their lives were far less chaotic, days when their lives had some sense of routine, normalcy.  They had been through so much; overcome so many storms.  It was no way they could handle anymore.  At the ends of their ropes, they had simply had enough.

There they were, tired and broken.  No lights, no power, no heat. As soon as they half-way recovered from one storm, another storm was almost on top of them.

With the angry Red Sea before them and Pharaoh’s Army behind them, they cried out to Moses, “We would have been better off dying as slaves in Egypt than out here in the wilderness.  At least they had fine cemeteries back in Egypt to lay our tired, broken bodies.  Out here, we have nothing!”

They continued: “Moses, we can’t take it anymore.  We can’t handle any more stress.  We can’t face another storm.  Moses, we can’t take another step.  We can’t go on any further.  We can’t fight another fight.”

It is then that Moses gives them the good news.  I believe it is one of the most comforting verses in the Old Testament.  To all the people who could not go any further, who had reached the end of their ropes, he said: “You don’t have to take another step.  All you have to do is be still, and the Lord, the Lord will fight for you.” 

And fight the Lord did, making a pathway through their storm, through the middle of the sea.  But God did not stop there. That’s what’s so great about our God.  Our God never stops there.  God then provided the Israelites with an all-you-can-eat buffet of quail and bread from heaven, even cool, fresh water from a rock.  And in their dark, cold world, God said to them, “I will be your light.  I will be as a pillar of fire leading you through this storm.”

This is of course what we call the Exodus story—the story of God providing a way when people thought there was no way, the story of a God not only granting salvation and life, but granting it abundantly.  It is THE story of the Old Testament.  It is the one story of the Old Testament that best describes how our God works in this world.  There is something built right into the very nature of God to create something very good out of something very bad, and abundantly so.

It should not surprise us then that the Exodus story of the Old Testament directly corresponds with the THE story of the New Testament—the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The story of God making a way, when there was no way, the story of God not only granting life, but granting it abundantly, the story in the New Testament that best describes how our God works in this world—creating and recreating, transforming and resurrecting.    

When wine gives out at a party, God not only turns water into a little bit of wine for one or two people.  God makes 180 gallons of wine for everyone.  When night is falling on a hungry multitude, God not only feeds 5,000 people, God feeds 5,000 people with an abundance left over.  When angry, sinful people crucified Jesus, God not only resurrected him to reign in heaven.  No, God didn’t stop there.  God resurrected him and gave him back to the very same people who killed him.  And promises that one day, they too will be resurrected.

And the good news is that this New Testament story, this story of resurrection, which in a way is a culmination of the great Exodus story, is not just a story or an event in history to remember, and it is not merely an event in our future we look forward to, it is an event to be lived in the present.  In 1 Peter we read, that God has given us a new birth, we have been baptized into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.   

During this week’s winter storm, the second storm to cripple the South in four weeks, I was listening to the radio as people were calling in reporting damage, snow or ice accumulations, and sharing how they were coping. I don’t believe I will ever forget one woman who called in from South Carolina.  She said that a tree came down on her carport crushing her car and her husband’s truck.  And another tree is leaning on the back of the house.  She said, “We made a small pathway outside the back door so we can get outside.” 

The man on the radio asked her, “Do you have any place to go?  Can you go over to a friend or relative’s house?”

She said, “No, but we’re fine.  We have each other and the Lord is good.  I don’t have any power.  But thankfully my house has got a gas stove. And we have wood for the fireplace.  And I just made us a big ol’ pot of chicken ‘n dumplin’s!”

That is when the man on the radio said, “That’s one thing about us Southerners.  Our power can be knocked out.  Our cars destroyed.  Trees on the house.  Can’t get out the front door.  But, one thing’s for sure, we’re going to eat and we’re going to eat good!”

I laughed.  For I had been through enough hurricanes to know that was true.  I thought, “Yes, there’s probably no other place in a world where people go through a natural disaster and gain weight!”  However, I believe that radio jockey missed something else that was in that woman’s voice.

When that woman said, “The Lord is good.”  She was not referring to God being good raising Jesus from the dead in the past.  And she was not looking forward to one day in the future God being good and resurrecting her. She was talking about God being good in the present. In the midst of her storm, she had found a way when there was no way. She was taking a bad situation and making something very good come from it. She was living the hope of the resurrection, today.

This is especially good news for many of us.  For the snow and ice this week are just the least of our troubles.  We face so many storms. Crime seems be up as just in the past weeks we have seen both Southern Bank and Zippy’s robbed. And then there are the storms of sickness, cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases—it’s everywhere we turn.  Someone we love is either diagnosed with something dreadful, or someone we love passes away.

And, at the ends of ropes, we feel like we cannot take another step. We cannot go any further. The good news is, that we don’t have to. God will fight for us right now, here in the present, and will make a way when it seems to be no way. God is here now, resurrecting and recreating and restoring filling us with the hope that although we cannot go back to the good old days, before the storm, before the diagnoses, before the accident, we can go forward with God into good new days.

 

Another man called into the radio station from Georgia this week to report that the sun was starting to peak through the clouds. And then he said, “And would you believe that there are two great big rainbows in the sky over the field behind my house!”

The radio jockey acted surprised, “really?” he said, “Two rainbows? How about that!”

But, from what we know about our God, none of us should have been surprised. Because that is just the way our God works.  God never stops at just one rainbow.

Benji, Anna, Johnathan and Jenny, your baptisms this morning, you rising up out of the water symbolize that no matter what storms come your way, you will always rise up. For God is going to be there, not to just remind you of something God did in the past–resurrecting Jesus, or something God is going to do in the future–resurrecting you.  God is going to be with you helping you live the resurrection in the present.  In the middle of your storm, there will always be a rainbow, and there is a good chance there may even be more than one.
